hi, i am a research fellow at goldsmiths university. i am looking at traditional plant knowledge, at the moment chillies in particular, and their survival within the urban context. i have been searching the internet but can't seem to find anywhere selling fresh varieties of interesting chillies (only dried versions). does anyone know where you can buy fresh varieties of interesting chillies, or have one or two pods of some new / interesting varieties they could send to me. i would be happy to send some money if anyone could help.

i am interested in how the global nature of the chilli and would ideally like to get a wide variety of types from the oldest to the newest varieties - these are some ideas but by no means exhaustive.

I got a couple of mixed bags along with some dorset nagas and thai hot from them last year.
You get a good mix in the mixed bags but alas they don't have names for them all but i know i got some aribibi gussano, rocoto red and balloon/bishops hat and many more that are a damn sight harder to id.

I have an order for fresh hot chillies in with Cross Country Nurseries. They're in New Jersey. My order is:

They also sell plants. Seedlings. But if you live on the other side of the ocean don't buy live plants. i bought 2 Nagas from England and they sat in customs so long they died on me. This place is also seasonal, so no plants right now and my fresh ones won't ship until September 15.

In the states a good place to order would be The Chilewoman.com She's located in Bloomington, Indiana, USA. As you are a fellow at Goldsmiths University, I'm guessing your location to be in London. I'm not familiar with the regulations on the international shipping of seed, so perhaps this supplier might not be practical for you. Has anyone shipped seed internationally?

Paprika is just Ground Bell Peppers you can get from any supermarket.

I bought live Naga Morich plants from the U.K. and they sat in American customs for over a week. They were basically dead when I received them. Seeds may be different. They may not even pay attention to them.

I was thinking that paprika was made from powdered dry Paprika peppers. Is there not a flavor specific to the Paprika pepper that distinguishes it from other peppers?

That's what I thought, there' s quite a few types of paprika pepper.

New Mexico University's Pepper Institue (NuMex - varieties) have specialised in peppers for paprika and mild chile varieties.
Plenty of their varieties are specifically bred for paprika powder!

In German "Paprika" is both bell pepper and paprika powder. Paprika IS ground (bell/mild chilli) pepper. Though there are certain peppers that are preferred for making paprika powder! Hence you can buy so many different tasting varieties of paprika. From the pure "red colour and not much taste" to the weird and wonderful!

In looking at the variety of words the Hungarians have for various Paprika peppers, it would seem to me that Paprika is more than just any ol' bell pepper.

For what it's worth, I believe that piri piri is just another name for the birdseye chilli, which are common as to find.

Our very own whitekoohii kindly gave me seeds for Jeromin, Jaranda and Jariza last year. These are three of the varieties used by the commercial manufacturers of pimentón de la Vera - the finest paprika in the world. "Any old bell pepper" may be suitable for making paprika. But compare supermarket own brand paprika with pimentón de la Vera and you're tasting two completely different things.

Actually if any of you who consider yourselves chilli lovers haven't tried pimentón de la Vera then you are missing out bit time. It's one of the nicest spice powders you will taste. Honestly, bog standard paprika doesn't taste of anything by comparison.
