Spent Soil

Postby RossDargan » Mon Feb 08, 2010 4:22 pm

What does everyone do with the leftover soil from the previous years growth?

I'm mainly talking about old grow bags etc as chillis in pots are just roots by the end of the year!

I did add most to the bed - just looks funky with all the perlite in it!

Nothing wrong with a funky looking bed ... although maybe some garden lights would make the perlite look better at night? ;)

I throw all my growbags on the veg beds at the end of the year. About the only thing to remember is not to throw any bags that you grew toms in onto the spud bed ;)

Any left over soil gets added to the general beds as mulch. Helps top up the levels and keep the weeds down a little.

mine gets chucked onto the veg patch & into the compost bin, works wonders & my compost's now looking good enough to use.

I stick it in my worm bin.

Anyone else got one of these? Great products, but the bin which is sealed and has a run-off section for liquid (which you then tap off and dilute for liquid feed).

You then order your worms online... yes seriously!

Then you use kind of like a compost bin but they eat more and it all works faster.

sounds interesting? Does it take up much space? and does the liquid produced smell as bad as I imagine it would?

I keep it outside, its the size of a big kitchen bin so not too big at all (you could make your own easily search online there are a few guides).

The liquid does smell pretty bad - but not really bad. Once it's diluted its fine I think its like 10 parts water, 1 part feed.

The bin itself seals well and i've never noticed a smell from it.
